Michelangelo sculpted the second Florentine Pieta fifty years after the Roman Pieta. It is thought that the Florentine Pieta was intended for his tomb, it took Michelangelo ten years, he started the Florentine Pieta at the age of seventy-three. To appreciate the differences of the two Pieta's, one should have the Roman and Florentine versions, side by side.
