Metate Grinding Bowl

Metate grinding sculptural bowl. This sculpture is a reproduction of a metate from the mainland of Costa Rica, about 900-1100 AD. The metate was used for grinding chilies, herbs and spices for sauces. Stone grinders remain a standard piece of kitchen equipment today. Caring For Your Artwork: We have combined a high-density stone with a catalyst to create this statue. The result is a durable statue that stands up to the ravages of time. Centuries-old casting techniques still apply. Artisans apply the patina - a labor-intensive process that requires several layers and specialized shading - all by hand.
