Born in Assisi, Italy, around 1181 or 1182,Β Saint Francis of Assisi became one of Christianity's most beloved and influential saints. Although raised in a prosperous family, Francis chose a humble life devoted to prayer, charity, peace, and service to others.
He founded the Franciscan religious order and became widely admired for his compassion toward the poor, his dedication to simplicity, and his remarkable appreciation for the natural world.
One of the most cherished stories of his life describes Saint Francis preaching to the birds, reminding them to be thankful for the gifts of creation. His special connection with animals and nature eventually led to his recognition as the patron saint of animals and ecology.
In this beautiful sculpture, the bird represents gentleness, harmony, and God's creation, while the cross held against his chest symbolizes his deep Christian faith and lifelong devotion to Christ.
